Creator's Block.

" Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions" - Albert Einstein.

I believe everyone goes through "brain freeze" at one point in their lives. That's very normal. As a creator though... not so much. You feel the obligation of consistently picking your brain. It's a never ending cycle. Most times you try to combine ideas together because you feel it's the right thing to do until well ... Nothing. So you scribble, go back to your original idea and realize that it no longer makes sense.

I remember when I first started writing. I'd read a lot before ( yes! I still read. not as much as before but once I put my hands on a book, I've got to finish it to understand what it's all about. I mean, it's the right thing to do. Right?) but whenever I'd read, my brain will travel to 25 different places. Mind you, I used to write short fiction stories and whenever I'd read back what I wrote, I'd realize that I would always write from one perspective of things. I'd find myself copying ideas from the book to match what I was writing and there was so many similarities that it didn't sound original. That was 5 years ago.

Today, I'm finding myself in that same place. A place where the idea is there but the execution is poor. I realized that lately, I've allowed my brain to indulge into so many things at once that I'm unable to distinguish which thoughts and ideas are my own. It's so uncomfortable, I'm getting anxiety and guess what?! I resort to distancing myself and slowly but surely I give up on everything all together.

I'm glad I've figured out some methods to keep my mind centered and I'm ready to share it with you. And Just like every advise I give : - " It's good and it works ... for me !!...*SHRUGS*"

1. Take 1 hour each day to detach from everything. By this I mean anything/everything that has possibilities of hindering your creative mind. (The internet , people , yourself - Yes if you didn't know that you were your own limitation/distraction, I can guarantee you that you are.) Go into solitude. Meditate.
2. Whatever new idea you get, write it down. If you thought of it at that moment, you will use it in the future so hang on to it.
3. Yes, it sounds very cliché but always think positive thoughts. Do not allow bad thoughts to take up too much time/space in your head. CUT IT from the root !
4. Never duplicate what someone else has already done, even if you thought of it first. Be inspired by what they've done.. allow your brain to go over and beyond what you seen/heard and better their method or think of new things to create.
5. There's always room for one more.

Dear God,
As I live everyday, I notice the magnitude of who you are by the growth I'm noticing in me.
Thank you for teaching me that I should stop being my own limitation
and to continue to push harder and grasp my opportunities as they come.
On this new journey or self discovery, I ask that you be with me and teach me your ways.
Amen.

  1. This truly ministered to me. Thank you for the encouragement and prayer. Being creative and authentic doesn't just happen. We actually need time to nurture what we have and be mindful of hoe well we take care of our thoughts, souls and craft. God bless you ;)
